The breeding of genetically altered animals has been defined as an animal experiment requiring approval if it is to be expected that the progeny may experience pain, suffering or harm due to the genetic alteration. This applies also to fish larvae as soon as they feed independently. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment/ Bundesinstitut für Risikobertung provides a severity assessment form which is available on their website or can be downloaded here.
